Nidderdale Angling Club’s River Nidd fishing starts where the river leaves Gouthwaite Reservoir and continues almost without a break to Dacre Banks, around seven miles downstream, taking in Pateley Bridge and Summerbridge. The Nidd here is a small, rain fed river that often runs under alder trees. It has a good population of wild brown trout and wild grayling, which average 9 to 10 inches, and, unusually for the Yorkshire Dales, a good Mayfly hatch in late May and early June. The club thinks the stretch from Dacre Banks to Summerbridge is probably the best for grayling.

The wild brown trout are strictly catch and release, and so are all grayling. Some areas are lightly stocked with brown trout marked with two blue spots under the belly, and those are the only fish that may be killed. Fly and bait are both allowed, apart from two fly only lengths at Glasshouses and Low Green. The trout season runs from 25 March to 30 September, with grayling fishing after that until 14 March.

Day and week tickets cover designated stretches of the river, and the rest is for members and season ticket holders. Waders are recommended, and a rod of 7 to 8½ feet suits the tree lined banks. The club has built platforms for disabled anglers on the Millennium Green in Pateley Bridge.

Stocking and fish species

light stocking · Certain areas are lightly stocked with brown trout, dye marked with two blue spots on the underside. Wild brown trout and all grayling are returned.
