Fish species

Anglers on the River Exe can target brown trout, grayling, sea trout and salmon. Brown trout dominate most beats here; grayling, sea trout, and salmon appear on certain rivers and seasons.

The River Exe rises at Exe Head on Exmoor, near Simonsbath, which is in Somerset. Almost the whole of its 60 miles is in Devon, though, and it flows more or less due south, through Tiverton and on to Exeter. Below Exeter it becomes a broad ria, the Exe Estuary, reaching the English Channel between Exmouth and Dawlish Warren. We list it under Devon only, but the first few miles are across the border.

The Barle joins at Exebridge. The river has a low pH but does not have a serious acid rain problem. It holds wild brown trout and grayling, with a run of Atlantic salmon and a sparser run of sea trout. In the lower reaches there are also coarse fish, including dace, chub, perch, roach, pike and bream.

Game fishing on the Exe has long been seen as a closed shop for those with the right connections. That is changing, and day tickets are now offered for trout, grayling and salmon on beats near Tiverton.

Rules differ from beat to beat. Some are fly only, and some ask for brown trout to be returned, so read the details before you go.
