England holds around 85% of the world's chalk streams. The heartland is Hampshire, Wiltshire, Berkshire and Dorset, with more in Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Kent and as far north as the Yorkshire Wolds. The Test, the Itchen, the Kennet, the Hampshire Avon, the Wylye, the Lambourn, the Dever. Fish them often enough and they start to feel ordinary. They are one of the rarest freshwater habitats on earth.
Almost everything about how a chalk stream fishes comes back to where the water has been before it reaches the river. Why it runs clear, why the temperature barely shifts between June and January, why ranunculus streams from every underwater rock in summer, why the fish are so spooky, why the invertebrates are so abundant: all of it starts underground.
The chalk aquifer: where the water comes from
Every other characteristic of a chalk stream follows from this one, so it is worth being precise about it.
Rain falls on the chalk downlands: the North and South Downs, the Hampshire Downs, Salisbury Plain, the Berkshire Downs, the Chilterns, the Dorset Downs, and the Wolds of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. Chalk is porous and shot through with fissures. Water seeps down through it slowly, over months, filtering as it goes, and collects in the saturated rock below ground. That is the chalk aquifer. Where it meets a valley floor or a fault in the landscape, it comes back to the surface as a spring.
The water in the river today fell as rain last winter, or the winter before. The aquifer buffers and delays everything. A rain-fed river answers the weather in hours, and a downpour puts it up the same day. A chalk stream answers over weeks and months.
How this differs from a rain-fed river
Most British trout rivers are rain-fed. They gather water off the surface of hills, moorland and clay, and they respond to weather within hours. Rain puts them up and colours them. A dry fortnight drops them away. Fishing one well starts with reading what the last few days have done.
A chalk stream barely registers the same weather. The rain that fell yesterday will not reach it for months, and by then it has been filtered, cooled and mixed with everything else in the aquifer.
So on a rain-fed river you watch the forecast. On a chalk stream you watch the season, the hatch and the light, and take the water much as you find it.

Gin-clear water
Chalk filters out suspended sediment and particles as water passes through it. By the time the water emerges from a spring, it is almost entirely clear. No peat stain, no clay run-off, no turbidity. The water in a chalk stream is usually as clear as water from a tap, often clearer.
The practical consequence is that sight-fishing is possible. You can see the fish, read its feeding position, watch the take. On a calm afternoon in May, you can spot a good trout holding six inches below the surface from thirty yards away.
The other practical consequence is that the fish can see you just as well. They are not forgiving of a heavy footfall on the bank, a shadow thrown across the water, or a poor presentation. Most of what makes chalk stream fishing difficult comes down to that.

River Test
Rising at Ashe, near Overton, the River Test runs for 40 miles through Hampshire, flowing south through Whitchurch, Longparish, and Wherwell before the Rivers Dever and Anton join the main channel near Chilbolton. For much of its length the Test is not one river but an amalgam of main channel, mill leats, carriers, and side streams, with two, three, or even four streams running parallel, all fishable, and it can be difficult to distinguish carrier from main river. The valley broadens through Stockbridge and Houghton before the Wallop Brook and River Dun add their flow near Kimbridge and Romsey, with the Test finally becoming a single channel only south of Romsey, a few miles from the sea. The river is one of only 12 chalk streams classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of only six that supports Atlantic salmon. It is recognised as being particularly sensitive to phosphate pollution, and conservation work by riparian owners, river keepers, and the Test and Itchen Association remains central to maintaining its ecology. It was on the banks of the River Test that Frederick Halford honed his ground-breaking ideas that effectively invented modern dry fly fishing in the late 1800s. That tradition still defines how most beats are fished: upstream dry fly and nymph, presented to visible, rising fish. The river supports over half a dozen species of stonefly, twenty-two species of mayfly, and nearly forty species of caddis fly, with grannom and hawthorn fly opening the season in spring and the mayfly hatch in late May drawing anglers from across the country. Wild brown trout are the primary quarry through the trout season, with Sea Trout, Atlantic Salmon, Grayling, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout all present across the valley. The river holds good populations of wild brown trout and grayling alongside stocked fish, and the salmon beats carry genuine holding pools. Grayling provide sport on dry fly and nymph into winter once the trout season closes. With 56 beats across 10 fisheries listed on FishingBeats, access to the River Test is broader than its private reputation might suggest. Kimbridge Estate offers seven miles of fishable bank managed to maintain a purist upstream dry fly fishery, while the Broadlands Estate extends for two and a half miles divided into dedicated trout beats and salmon beats. The Leckford Estate on the middle Test, north of Stockbridge, has 16 fishing beats open to anglers from May to October. Steady, cool temperature year-round
Groundwater holds a near-constant temperature regardless of the season. In England, chalk spring water emerges close to 10°C and rarely strays far from it, so the rivers run cool in summer and relatively mild in winter.
Brown trout grow fastest at around 13°C. Growth slows as the water warms past that and stops altogether near 19.5°C, which is roughly where they also go off the feed. A chalk stream spends most of the year comfortably the right side of that. A hot spell that pushes the air past 30°C will warm the water, but the spring input moderates it. In January, when a rain-fed river might be close to freezing, a chalk stream will be noticeably warmer.
That stability suits both fish and invertebrates, and it is one of the reasons chalk streams are so productive. The conditions for feeding and growth hold across a much longer portion of the year than they do on most rivers.
Stable flow
Because the aquifer buffers rainfall over months, chalk streams run at a much more consistent level than surface-fed rivers. A dry winter shows up as reduced flow the following spring and summer; a wet winter shows up as higher flows in the months that follow. The swings are slow and gradual. A day of heavy rain does not produce a flood. A dry fortnight does not produce a drought.
This matters enormously for the ecology. Invertebrates can establish in gravel beds because those beds are not periodically scoured out by spate. Ranunculus can root and grow in the current because the current does not regularly exceed what the plant can hold on to. Spawning beds accumulate clean gravel because the flow is steady enough to keep it there without washing it away or burying it in silt.
It matters practically for the angler too. If you check the gauge on a chalk stream in the morning and it reads a normal level, you can be fairly confident it will read much the same when you arrive in the afternoon. Rain-fed rivers don't often offer that.
Alkaline, mineral-rich water
Water passing through chalk rock picks up calcium carbonate and other dissolved minerals. By the time it reaches the river it is alkaline, typically with a pH between 7.5 and 8.5. Hard water in the specific sense of the word.
That chemistry is what makes the habitat productive. The dissolved bicarbonate gives submerged plants a ready carbon source, so ranunculus grows fast and so do the diatoms that film every stone on the bed. Those diatoms are the bottom of the food chain. The calcium goes into shells and exoskeletons, which is why a chalk stream can carry the shrimp and snail populations it does. A chalk stream running through land in decent condition is, chemically, close to ideal for insect life.
This is why the trout on a well-maintained chalk stream grow quickly, and to good size, on wild food.
Ranunculus: the signature weed
The water crowfoot that gives a chalk stream its look is Ranunculus penicillatus subspecies pseudofluitans, known plainly enough as chalk-stream water-crowfoot. In early summer, a good chalk stream running between beds of white flower is one of the more distinctive sights in English fishing. The flowers sit at the surface in clusters; below them, long green ribbons of weed stream in the current, sometimes several metres long.
Ranunculus wants the specific conditions a chalk stream provides: clear water, because it needs light, along with cool temperatures, steady flow and the alkaline chemistry that supports growth. When those conditions break down, through turbidity, nutrient enrichment or reduced flow from abstraction, ranunculus retreats and then disappears. Its absence is one of the more reliable signs of a river in trouble.
It does several useful things. It oxygenates the water through photosynthesis. It builds the current structure fish use to hold and feed with minimum effort: the eddies, the cushions of slack water, the narrow threads of faster flow between the beds. And it shelters both invertebrates and juvenile fish from predation and current.
Clean gravel beds
Because chalk streams run at a steady flow, and because the water carries very little suspended sediment, the gravel on the bed stays clean. In a spate river, gravel is regularly shifted, buried under silt during high water and scoured clean during floods. In a chalk stream it accumulates slowly and stays.
Clean gravel is the prerequisite for trout and grayling spawning. Both species cut redds, shallow depressions in the bed into which the female deposits eggs and the male fertilises them. The eggs need water flowing through the gravel around them to supply oxygen and carry waste away. Silt reduces that flow and can suffocate eggs before they hatch.
On a chalk stream in good condition you can see the pale spawning gravels clearly through the water in winter, and the depressions where fish have been working. Where the habitat is under pressure, from run-off off surrounding land or from reduced flow that lets silt settle, the gravel silts up. Recruitment fails, and the trout population follows. Putting that right takes years of work on the gravel.
Abundant invertebrate life
Clear alkaline water, stable temperature, clean gravel and ranunculus together produce one of the richest freshwater invertebrate communities in the world.
Mayflies, particularly Ephemera danica (the large mayfly), are the most visible. The hatch in late May and early June is what chalk streams are most famous for, and it deserves the reputation, with big duns coming off in numbers and fish feeding hard at the surface through the afternoon. But the mayfly is one species among dozens, and on a good river something is coming off most of the season.
- March onwards. Large dark olives (Baetis rhodani), the first real hatch of the year.
- April. The grannom, in quantities that can be hard to credit.
- Late May into June. The mayfly, Ephemera danica.
- July and August. Blue-winged olives (Serratella ignita, long known to anglers as Ephemerella ignita), which carry the summer evenings.
Freshwater shrimp (Gammarus pulex) live in the weed in enormous numbers and make up a large part of the trout's diet between hatches. Midge and caddis larvae in the gravel add to it.
That is why the fish grow, and why fishing a chalk stream well means paying attention to the insects. Not as a subject in itself, but because a trout can be locked onto one species and ignoring everything else on the water.
Wild brown trout and grayling
The fish are the direct result of everything above. Wild brown trout (Salmo trutta) adapted over centuries to cool, alkaline, food-rich water. Chalk stream fish have a particular character: selective in their feeding, powerful, well-conditioned on a natural diet. By stillwater standards they are not big. A pound and a half is a good fish on many rivers and two pounds a very good one, and none of them come easily. If you would rather fish for wild fish than stocked ones, some beats are wild-only.
Grayling (Thymallus thymallus), the "lady of the stream" as they are traditionally known, share the same conditions and come into their own through winter when the trout season is closed. They are school fish. Find them on a run of clean gravel in January and you generally find them in numbers. They are underrated as a target, and worth the attention.
Both species are indicators of the health of what surrounds them. A chalk stream producing genuine wild fish in good numbers is a chalk stream where the habitat is working. Where wild populations decline it is rarely for one reason alone. Usually it is reduced flow from abstraction, silt, rising temperature and nutrient enrichment working together over time.

Why this matters
England has just over 200 chalk streams, 224 by the most detailed count. That is not many. The rivers of the Test valley, the Hampshire Avon, the upper Kennet and the Wylye are the finest examples, and all of them are under some degree of pressure. Over-abstraction of the aquifer for drinking water reduces the flow that sustains everything above it. Agricultural run-off adds nutrients that tip the balance towards blanket weed and algal growth rather than ranunculus. A warming climate squeezes the temperature envelope that suits trout.

River Kennet
Rising from Swallowhead Springs near Silbury Hill in Wiltshire, the River Kennet is a chalk stream of 45 miles, flowing east through Marlborough and into Berkshire at Hungerford, where the Kennet and Avon Canal joins its course, then on through Newbury, where the River Lambourn enters, and east to Reading, where it meets the Thames. In summer it contributes up to half the Thames's flow at that point. Though it is only 22 miles from source to Newbury, 18th-century water engineers created more than 80 miles of fishable water through a maze of carriers. The upper reaches have classic chalk stream characteristics and the river has been famous for trout fishing since the late nineteenth century. The River Kennet holds and fishes primarily on upstream dry fly, with nymph permitted on some beats. Olive hatches in spring combine with grannom and hawthorn before the mayfly arrives, which is followed by excellent evening fishing through summer as caddis flies gather. The mayfly arrives comparatively late relative to other southern chalk streams, with the best sport often found in the first weeks of June. In winter the river runs exceptionally clear, offering some of the finest sight-fishing for grayling available on any English chalk stream. The river carries notable angling history: Halford held a lease on a considerable length of water in the late 1800s, and John Waller Hills wrote regularly about the native Kennet brown trout, known as the "greenback", now a much sought-after rarity. The Eastridge Estate's stretch on the Berkshire and Wiltshire border won the Wild Trout Trust's 2014 Conservation Award for its habitat improvement work. Anglers should be aware that the Angling Trust and Action for the River Kennet (ARK) have raised significant concerns regarding ongoing sewage pollution in the Kennet catchment, overseen by Thames Water. River keepers and organisations like the Wild Trout Trust do the work of putting it back: restoring ranunculus, de-silting spawning gravels, reducing bankside erosion, making the case to water companies and regulators. Where that work is sustained, stretches recover.
These rivers do not look after themselves. The things that make them exceptional are the same things that make them fragile. Understanding what a chalk stream actually is tends to make you more careful with the one you're standing in.
