About Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing

Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing is five miles of the River Wharfe in the Yorkshire Dales, running from Barden Bridge down to Kex Beck, with wild brown trout and grayling averaging 10 to 12 inches. The estate says it holds a good stock of both.

Fishing is sold two ways. Annual membership is capped at 75 anglers, and a small number of day tickets are released each day from 1 June to 14 March. Members and hotel guests can fish from the start of the trout season. The water is divided into six beats, Barden, Strid, Cavendish, Priory, Bolton Bridge and Beamsley, and Barden at the top is members only.

Trout can be fished from 25 March to 30 September and grayling from 16 June to 14 March. Fishing is fly only, with a conventional fly rod and reel. Hooks must be barbless or de-barbed, no larger than a size 12, and tandems, doubles and trebles are not allowed. Lures and reservoir flies are out. The estate now asks for catch and release throughout, so every trout and grayling goes back. Every visitor sends in a catch return, blank days included. Chest waders, a wading staff and a life preserver are recommended.

Day tickets are booked through the Estate Office, and the estate’s fishing map shows the limits.

Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing FAQs

Common questions about Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing and its beats, answered in one place.

01What are the opening hours for Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing?
Opening hours are listed in the Contact Information section on the Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing page. Many chalk stream fisheries operate from first light to dusk — confirm exact hours with the fishery when you book.
02Does Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing offer accommodation?
Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing does not currently list on-site accommodation. The surrounding area along the River Wharfe has a range of options — the fishery can often suggest somewhere local when you book.
03Can I buy a multi-day pass or season permit?
Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing offers both day tickets and season membership — day tickets suit a single visit, while a membership gives regular access throughout the season. Contact the fishery for current prices.
04Are beginners or less experienced anglers welcome?
Chalk stream fishing can be technically demanding, but Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing has beats that range in difficulty. If you're new to dry fly fishing on the River Wharfe, mention it when you book and the keeper can point you to the most forgiving water.

Some beats at Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing have flat bank access that may suit anglers with limited mobility. Check the individual beat pages — those with disabled access are marked clearly. It's always worth calling ahead so they can make any practical arrangements.
06What should I expect when I arrive?
On arrival at Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing, report to the fishery office or meet the keeper as instructed when you booked. You'll be shown to your beat, given any local rules specific to that stretch, and told about parking, facilities, and the finish time. Carry your EA rod licence and booking confirmation at all times.
07 Is club water available, or is it day ticket only?
Bolton Abbey Estate Fishing offers season membership rather than formal club arrangements — check the fishery page for details or contact them directly about the current season.
