Fish species

Anglers on the River Wharfe can target brown trout and grayling. Brown trout dominate most beats here; grayling, sea trout, and salmon appear on certain rivers and seasons.

The River Wharfe begins at Beckermonds in Langstrothdale, where Greenfield Beck and Oughtershaw Beck meet high in the Yorkshire Dales, and runs about 65 miles to join the Ouse near Cawood. For much of its middle course it marks the boundary between North and West Yorkshire. The upper dale is cut through limestone, sandstone and shale, while the lower river runs over Millstone Grit and glacial gravels, so the character shifts a good deal between the headwaters and the wider, gentler water around Ilkley and Otley.

It is a trout and grayling river. Anglers fishing the Ilkley stretch describe wild brown trout to 4lb and more and grayling to 2lb, in a mix of pools, glides and rapids that is wide enough for fly casting and mostly easy wading. The Skirfare, which drains Littondale, is the main tributary in the upper river and adds to the same trout fishing.

The trout season runs through the spring and summer, and grayling fishing carries on into the colder months. Fishing along the river is held by clubs, associations and estates, and some of it is open to visitors.
