About Ouse Angling Preservation Society
Ouse Angling Preservation Society was established in 1875 and holds fishing on the Sussex Ouse above Lewes. This listing covers its sea trout fishing: about six miles of the river downstream of the Anchor Inn, north of Barcombe Mills, as far as the bottom of the Hamsey Cut, about a mile and a half north of Lewes. The fishing is mainly single bank and the river is tidal as far upstream as Barcombe Mills. The society says its sea trout have a high average weight, possibly the highest of any river in England or Wales, and that it is an unusual season that does not give up double figure fish. It runs a strict catch and release policy for sea trout, and it also has coarse fishing with its own permits.
Sea trout fishing is by annual permit. The society’s 2026 to 2027 prices are £145 for ages 19 to 64, £115 from state pension age and £55 for ages 14 to 18. Someone who does not already hold a current sea trout permit pays a £25 administration fee on top. Permits can sell out, and the society takes names for a waiting list. Everything is bought through the society’s page on Clubmate, where you set up an account and the society then gets in touch. Sea trout guest permits are available to permit holders at £20 for adults and £10 for ages 14 to 18, and under 14s fish free with an adult or senior permit holder.
The Barcombe Mills pool is reserved for sea trout fishing from 1 May to 31 October and needs a separate pool permit, which only sea trout permit holders can book. It is listed as its own water. You also need an Environment Agency salmon and sea trout rod licence.
