About Sussex Ouse, Anchor Inn to Hamsey, sea trout

This is Ouse Angling Preservation Society’s sea trout water on the Sussex Ouse: about six miles from the Anchor Inn, north of Barcombe Mills, downstream to the bottom of the Hamsey Cut, about a mile and a half north of Lewes. The fishing is mainly single bank and the river is tidal as far upstream as Barcombe Mills. The society describes the water in two parts, north of Barcombe Mills and south of Barcombe Mills, and signs mark the limits of what permit holders can fish. The society’s pages describe the water by its ends and named areas rather than exact limits, so the position shown is approximate. There is also about a mile and a half of small stream on the Bevern, from the old railway bridge near Barcombe Mills up to Clappers Bridge at Barcombe Cross, which the society keeps open in a limited way to protect the sea trout spawning and nursery water.

Fishing rules for Sussex Ouse, Anchor Inn to Hamsey, sea trout

A current society Sea Trout Permit and a current Environment Agency salmon and sea trout rod licence are both needed. The society runs a strict catch and release policy for sea trout. The sea trout season closes on 31 October and sea trout are closed from 1 November to 30 April. In the coarse close season sea trout may only be fished for with artificial lures and flies. During October, spinners, spoons, plugs and flies other than dry flies must be at least 12.5 cm long including the hooks. On lures and spinners the barbs must be squeezed down or the hooks semi barbed. An angler who accidentally catches a sea trout or smolt sends the society a catch return with length, weight, place and date. No fishing between one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise, except at the Mill Pool on a pool permit. No more than two rods, no live baiting. The Bevern stream has no bait fishing with worms, maggots or casters, no spinning, and a minimum hook size of 10.
