About fly fishing in Herefordshire
Herefordshire’s fly fishing on FishingBeats is salmon on the middle Wye, small trout and grayling rivers that run into it, and one trout lake. We list only part of the county’s fishing, and much of the Wye is private or held by clubs and syndicates. The Wye is also a coarse river, and several beats here sell coarse fishing alongside the game.
Most of the day ticket water is booked through the Fishing Passport, an online system run on a not for profit basis by the Wye and Usk Foundation. It owns no water; each fishery stays with its owner. On the Wye its beats run from Whitney Court, downstream of Hay-on-Wye, to Goodrich Court below Ross-on-Wye. Whitney Court is about three miles: salmon £40 a day, or £23 for river trout, fly only. The Foy Fishery is £37 and can be booked as one beat from 15 March to 15 June inclusive. Red Lion Moccas, four miles on the middle river, sells salmon between 15 March and 15 June at £37. Lower Carrots and Luggsmouth is £30 and is booked by contacting the Passport, not on the website. Caradoc is listed at £45 to £46, and Goodrich Court is £50, fly only before noon. Salmon on all these beats are catch and release.
The Lugg and Arrow have trout beats and winter grayling. The Eyton Beat on the Lugg is £24 a day, with a £12 evening ticket from 5pm between April and September. It is fly only from 3 March to 31 October, and no wading is allowed from 1 November to 2 March, to protect spawning salmon. On the Arrow, Hergest Court above Kington is a £19 trout day ticket, and The Leen is a grayling beat open from 1 October to 31 January, listed at £18.50 to £20.
The Passport’s Wild Streams are small wild brown trout waters: the Dore, Escley Brook, Dulas Brook, Hindwell Brook, Pinsley Brook, the Monnow at Lower Longtown and several Arrow beats. The Passport suggests rods of six and a half to seven and a half feet rated 2 to 4 weight, and a 1 to 3 weight on Pinsley Brook, which narrows to under a metre through much of its length. Most are fly only and catch and release. Book a day ahead, online or by phone before 6pm the day before, or fish them on a Wild Stream Season Permit, which for 2026 is £100 for one rod or £140 for two.
Hereford and District Angling Association holds the Wye from Breinton to Fownhope and the Lugg from Sutton St Nicholas to Tidnor, with some breaks. It says its Wye water is best known for coarse fishing; the game fishing is salmon on the Wye and trout and grayling on both rivers. The trout season is 17 March to 8 October, fly only with every trout returned. Visitors buy a day ticket in advance from the tackle shops the association names, not on the bank. For 2026, membership for trout and coarse is £65, and £100 with salmon. Ross-on-Wye Angling Club has about five miles of the Wye, but its salmon fishing is for members of the salmon section only, with a waiting list and no day tickets. Letton Court Fishery sells game fishing on 1.5 miles of left bank at £15 for a full day or £30 for a day and night, booked online in advance and catch and release. Old Harp Fishery at Hoarwithy sets its rates by arrangement, so ask. Ingestone Fishery is a members’ syndicate, £700 for 2026, by application only.
Kingfisher Trout Lake, just under four acres at Bromyard, is the one stillwater. It is open every day from 8am until dark. Tickets are £35 for four fish and £25 for two, or a sporting ticket at £25 for the day in summer and £20 in winter. The fishery doesn’t say what the sporting ticket allows, so ask.
It suits a salmon angler happy to book by the beat, or anyone who likes a short rod on small wild water.

Fish species in Herefordshire
What the beats above hold, and where else in England you can fish for the same species.
Three different kinds of operator, and most visitors want the first. A fishery or estate owns the water and sells you a day on it. A club or syndicate holds water for its members, sometimes with day tickets alongside. A guide or agent sells days on water somebody else owns, and often comes with you.

Finding fly fishing near you in Herefordshire
The map above plots Herefordshire's beats and fisheries against the county boundary, so you can see roughly how far a stretch is rather than just its name on a list. Tap a marker for a quick read on price and species before you go further. If you're weighing this county against somewhere else, or want to see every day-ticket beat in the country at once, the full beat map covers all of them.
A day ticket is usually a half day or a full day on the water, so it's worth weighing the drive against how much fishing you'll actually get out of it. A longer trip makes more sense for a full day than for two or three hours in the afternoon.
For scale, the River Wye rises near Plynlimon, in the Cambrian Mountains, mid Wales, and the River Arrow rises near Near Gwaunceste Hill, Powys. Beats sit further downstream from there, not at the source itself. The map above is the more exact guide to which stretch is closest to you.
Fly fishing lessons and tuition in Herefordshire
FishingBeats doesn't list fly fishing schools or dedicated instructors: the agents and guides above are the ones selling day tickets and guided days on Herefordshire's beats. Some may be willing to teach alongside a day out even where it isn't sold as a separate product, so it's worth asking rather than assuming either way. That's a different thing from starting from scratch, though: a guided day generally assumes you can already cast, where a lesson teaches the cast itself, and most UK fly fishing lessons for that begin on a stillwater rather than a river. How tuition, guided days and courses fit together is covered on the agents page. Once you can put a fly out, easy beats rated for a first visit or beats where you can arrange a ghillie are a reasonable next step, and a few beginner-friendly beats to start on is worth reading before you book.
