About Upper Roddlesworth Reservoir
Upper Roddlesworth is a 24 acre reservoir at Abbey Village, on the A675 about three miles from junction 3 of the M65. It is one of the Rivington chain of reservoirs and is fished through Horwich and District Fly Fishing Club, which has leased it since 1983. The club calls it by far the most scenic of the chain.
The club says the dam wall and most of the right hand bank are very easy to fish for novices, and that the left hand bank is harder but can reward the extra effort, with care needed on the back cast because walkers may stray behind you. Fish are often close to the shore, so roll casting covers the water. Buzzers catch fish through the season, daddies come in from August, and there is a fairly substantial mayfly hatch. Lures work at times, but more fish are being taken on the dry fly.
Day tickets are bought online: £20 for an adult, £15 for a junior aged 15 to 18, and under 15s fish free with an adult day ticket holder, with no fish to be killed. The fishery is open all year, from dawn to dusk, with no time limit on the visit. Day tickets are for a two fish limit and then catch and return. Members can also use club boats from April until the end of October, which day ticket anglers cannot. Membership is limited and the club keeps a waiting list. Ring the fishery officer before booking for the latest update.
