About the River Escley Brook
Escley Brook is a high gradient, fast flowing upland stream that runs off the eastern edge of the Black Mountains and into the Monnow at Longtown, in the far south west of Herefordshire. The village of Michaelchurch Escley takes its name from it. It is one of the Monnow streams.
The Wye and Usk Foundation describes it as prime upland trout fishing. The bed is largely bedrock, with a run of pools between fast shallow water, and its habitat has been restored in recent years. The trout are plentiful and of a good average size, and like the other Monnow streams it has a decent mayfly hatch.
The Wye and Usk Foundation’s Fishing Passport has a fly only, catch and release beat on the brook. Other stretches are held by their riverside owners.
