About Escley Beat 1
Escley Beat 1 is just under a mile on the Escley Brook, a high gradient, fast flowing upland trout stream that runs off the eastern edge of the Black Mountains into the Monnow at Longtown. The Passport describes a sequence of pools interspersed with fast shallow water over a largely bedrock bed, with a high number of trout and a high average size, and a decent mayfly hatch like the other Monnow streams. The many watergates can be tricky to negotiate, and studded soles on your waders are highly recommended. The Passport suggests a rod of six and a half to seven and a half feet rated 2 to 4 weight.
The beat has a healthy population of native crayfish. Waders, nets and tackle must be sprayed with Virkon before and after fishing. It is fly only, all species are catch and release, and dogs are not allowed. It is a Wild Stream beat: it is booked through the Fishing Passport, or fished on a Wild Stream Season Permit.
