About Bank House Lake
Bank House is a 2.5 acre trout lake at Low Mill, Caton, near Lancaster. It was planned for fly fishing and wildlife, with twelve small islands that make a network of slow swims and pools. The water flows round the lake and leaves by one of three outlets, so the fishery says there are few dead areas where it warms and loses oxygen in summer. The islands and planting break the line of sight, and the fishery says it does not feel crowded even with 16 anglers fishing.
The lake holds rainbow, blue, brown and tiger trout. The fishery says it is rich in corixa, damsels, buzzers, shrimps and sedge, with plenty of sticklebacks, so fry patterns and small beaded flies are worth carrying. Its records are a 23lb 4oz rainbow, a 16lb 8oz brown and a 10lb 5oz tiger.
Tickets are sold by length of session. Twelve hours is £46 for four fish, £40 for two fish and £32 for catch and release. Eight hours is £40, £35 and £27, six hours is £30 for two fish, £28 for one and £24 for catch and release, and four hours is £27, £24 and £20. Junior tickets are cheaper, and a non angling guest pays £10 for a four or six hour session or £15 for eight or twelve hours. The tariff does not say whether you can carry on catch and release after reaching your fish limit.
The fishery is open daily from 8am until dusk, and you can pay by card over the phone or get a ticket from the house. Tackle hire is £10 for four or six hours and £15 for eight or twelve, and lessons with Ben Dobson are booked in advance. Annual memberships are available, so ring to ask.
