About Lower Longtown
Lower Longtown is two thirds of a mile of mostly double bank on the River Monnow at Longtown. Towards the top end of the beat is the pool where the Escley Brook joins the Monnow, which the Passport warns has quite a few dark shadows loitering in the depths. The Passport suggests a rod of six and a half to eight feet rated 2 to 4 weight.
Native crayfish are present on this stretch, so good biosecurity is essential. It is fly only, all species are catch and release, and dogs are allowed if kept under control. It is a Wild Stream beat: it is booked through the Fishing Passport, or fished on a Wild Stream Season Permit.
