About the River Dore

The River Dore rises on Cusop Hill, in the foothills of the Black Mountains close to the border with Wales. It runs about 12 miles through Dorstone, Peterchurch, Vowchurch, Abbey Dore and Pontrilas before it joins the Monnow near Llangua. The Golden Valley takes its name from the river, by way of a mix up between the Welsh word for water, dŵr, and the Norman French d’or, meaning golden.
