About the River Medway

The River Medway rises from springs in the High Weald near Turners Hill in West Sussex and runs about 70 miles to the Thames Estuary at Sheerness in Kent. Its upper reaches are in Sussex and most of its length is in Kent. It flows east past Forest Row and Hartfield in East Sussex, then through Tonbridge and Maidstone before turning north through the Medway towns. Weir Wood Reservoir intercepts the upper river. Below Tonbridge it is a larger navigable river with locks, and the tidal limit is at Allington.
