About the River Western Rother

The Western Rother rises at Empshott in east Hampshire and runs about 32 miles to the River Arun at Stopham in West Sussex. Roughly the first six miles are in Hampshire, and the rest is in West Sussex. It is called the Western Rother to tell it from the Eastern Rother on the Kent and East Sussex border. The river above Midhurst has long powered watermills, and below Midhurst it runs through Petworth and on to the Arun. It flows through the South Downs National Park, and groundwater from the Lower Greensand and the chalk helps keep it running in summer.
