About the River Wyre

The River Wyre is 28 miles long. It rises in the Forest of Bowland as two streams, the Tarnbrook Wyre and the Marshaw Wyre, which meet near Abbeystead. It flows south through Dolphinholme to Garstang, where the Lancaster Canal crosses it on a small aqueduct, and a mile further on at Catterall it meets its first big tributary, a river also called the Calder. It then turns west through St Michael’s on Wyre, where the River Brock joins, and is tidal below the weir there. It reaches the Irish Sea at Fleetwood. It is the only major Lancashire river that flows wholly inside the ceremonial county.
