About Chalybeate Springs Lake
Chalybeate Springs is a stream fed lake of just over 2 acres hidden away on the Eridge Estate, in Eridge Park near Tunbridge Wells. The fishery stocks rainbow and brown trout between 2lb 8oz and 8lb, and says some of the original wild brown trout still breed in the stream and can be seen rising to the natural fly life. It gets hatches of buzzer, mayfly, pond olive, damsel, sedge and hawthorn in the spring and daddy longlegs in September and October, and the fishery says these fish well as dry flies as well as nymphs. It fishes as a small stillwater.
Day tickets are for 2 fish at £35, 3 fish at £40 or 4 fish at £45. Brown trout must be returned, and other fish you catch are kept and weighed and entered in the record book in the lodge. Catch and release is only allowed with the bailiff’s agreement and barbless hooks. When you reach your bag, the bailiff can sell you a new ticket.
You fish with a single fly of size 8 or smaller, with no droppers or snake flies, on floating or sinking line. Wading is not allowed and there are no boats. The fishery has no paved paths or hard standing around the lake, and no dogs are allowed because it is an ancient deer park. It advises you to ring before a visit, and to check the dates it is closed on its home page.
