About River Lugg, Sutton St Nicholas to Tidnor
This is Hereford & District Angling Association’s water on the River Lugg, from Sutton St Nicholas to Tidnor, with some breaks and a mix of double and single bank. The association publishes five sections: Wergins Bridge, Shelwick, Lugg Mills Bridge, Lugg Meadow and Lower Lugg Meadow at Lugwardine. This listing covers them together, because the association sets one set of rules for all its waters.
The Lugg is the association’s fly water for trout and grayling. Its Wergins Bridge page says the river upstream of the bridge is ideal for fly fishing for trout and grayling, shallow over a gravel bed with deeper glides and plenty of bankside cover. The Shelwick page says brown trout are present, the Lugg Mills Bridge page says trout and grayling can be caught on the gravels with fly tactics, and the Lower Lugg Meadow page calls the stretch a good area for fly fishing. Chub, barbel and dace are the main coarse fish. The Lugg Meadows are a protected site that floods in winter, and the association asks anglers to keep to the riverside paths, because ground-nesting curlews restrict the meadows in spring and summer.
The association’s trout season is 17 March to 8 October. Members fish on their membership, and visitors can buy a day ticket from the tackle shops the association names.
