About The Eyton Beat
The Eyton Beat is about a mile and a half of mostly double bank on the River Lugg, a few miles upstream of Leominster, with trout and grayling. The Passport says the river is becoming renowned as a winter grayling destination, an easier option than the main Wye, with specimen fish often turning up in the catch returns, and calls the beat a fine place for a day’s fishing throughout the year.
The beat is pasture, and much of the river has been fenced off to keep cattle out. That makes fishing from the bank a little harder in the deeper areas where wading is not possible. Where wading is permitted it is relatively easy over the gravel and silt bed, though getting in and out is difficult in the wooded areas shown in green on the beat map. The council has closed the footpath bridge anglers used, so in low water anglers in chest waders may be able to find crossing points to the south bank between the two weirs. Parking is about 450 metres from the river.
No wading is permitted from 1 November to 2 March, to protect spawning salmon, and in that period the only workable grayling method is float fishing or trotting with maggots or other bait from the bank. Between April and September half price evening tickets can be bought after 1pm on the day, with fishing from 5pm. It is fly only between 3 March and 31 October, and all species are catch and release. The trout day ticket costs £24 and the evening ticket £12, with the winter grayling day ticket listed at £23.50 to £24. It is booked through the Fishing Passport, and an online block booking is available.
