About Leconfield Fly Fishing Club lakes, Petworth
These are the lakes of Leconfield Fly Fishing Club on the Leconfield Estate: five in the northern part of the estate, Great Springs, Little Springs, Luffs, Upper Figgs and Lower Figgs, and two at Little Bognor near Fittleworth, about two miles south east of Petworth. The club names seven lakes in all, the largest a little over two acres, and does not give a total area. The lakes are in two places a few miles apart, so the position shown is approximate.
Most of the lakes are stocked with rainbow trout, which the club says rise freely. The two Little Bognor lakes are stocked with locally reared brown trout and hold wild browns, which must be returned. About 4,500 trout are stocked a year, averaging 2½ lb, with some larger fish. Great Springs has a fishing lodge where members sign in and weigh their catch, and flies, leaders and other small items are sold there. The other lakes have fishing huts and car parks. The season on the lakes runs from mid March to 31 October, and the committee and the estate decide each year whether to extend it to the end of November.
The lakes are for members. Catch and release is allowed on the rainbow lakes from the start of the season until the water gets too warm, and again in the autumn, and at Little Bognor all season, on barbless or de-barbed hooks. To join, contact the Estate Office for an application form.
