About River Rother, Petworth, Leconfield Fly Fishing Club
This is Leconfield Fly Fishing Club’s water on the Western Rother, three miles of double bank fishing on the Leconfield Estate south of Petworth. It is split into several beats, each with its own car park and easy walking to the river. The club does not publish where the stretch starts and ends, so the position shown is approximate.
The river is home to wild brown trout and has a run of sea trout. Locally reared brown trout are stocked throughout the season to add to the wild fish. The club describes good mayfly and alder hatches, crane flies from the water meadows and a consistently good evening rise, and says it is common to have the river to yourself in midweek. The season runs from early April to 31 October. Wild brown trout and sea trout must be returned where possible; stocked fish can be kept or returned. The club works with the Environment Agency, the Arun and Rother Rivers Trust and the Wild Trout Trust and has built two spawning riffles.
This is members’ water. Members can fish any beat on any day, signing in and recording their catch at each beat. To join, contact the Estate Office for an application form, or ask the keeper about a guided tour.
