About River Rother, Coates Castle, Petworth and Bognor Angling Club
This is the club’s three mile stretch of the south bank of the Western Rother, running from Shopham Bridge almost down to Fittleworth. The club acquired the fishing rights in June 2008. The ways in at Shopham Bridge and at the hamlet of Coates are a couple of minutes’ walk from the nearest swims, and there are several miles of river to explore for anyone willing to rove.
The club calls it a particularly beautiful part of the Rother, which had been fished only by a small game fishing syndicate for many years and has seen little angling pressure since. It says the species and stocks are similar to the neighbouring Fittleworth and Shopham stretches, which it says have a very good run of sea trout most years. The stretch runs through open pasture with patches of trees and bushes. The position shown is approximate.
The water is for members of Petworth and Bognor Angling Club. Membership is limited and the club keeps a referral list: ask to be added through the contact form on its website, and it sends an application pack shortly before memberships open for the next season.
