About Fownhope 5
Fownhope 5 is just over three quarters of a mile of single, left bank on the middle Wye, a few miles downstream of Hereford. It has four named salmon pools, The Barr, Lea Brink, Froth Hole and The Lucky Stone, and other unnamed pools at the lower end that are worth exploring. In good water conditions it suits fly fishing and spinning where the byelaws allow. The Passport rates this part of the Wye highly for coarse fishing too.
It is a 300 yard walk from the parking area to the bank. There is no way into the wood from the upstream end because of a landslide, so to fish that section or below you use the public footpath round the wood and enter from the downstream end. At the water’s edge getting about is relatively easy, with a number of croys at the upper end and more open banks below the wood. The owners keep the right to fish two rods a day, though these are seldom used.
All species are catch and release and dogs are not allowed. A salmon day ticket costs £40, with up to four tickets a day, and a block booking can be made. It is booked through the Fishing Passport.
