About River Wye, Ross-on-Wye Angling Club water
This is Ross-on-Wye Angling Club’s water on the River Wye, about five miles above and below Ross-on-Wye on the Duchy of Cornwall estate. The club names five waters: Upper Benhall, Lower Benhall, the Town Water, Weirend and Sellack. This listing covers them together, because the club sets one set of rules for its salmon fishing.
Salmon fishing is for members of the club’s salmon section. The club’s salmon notes divide the water into three parts: Upper Benhall at the top, Lower Benhall and the Town Water in the middle, and Weirend at the bottom, which the club calls its official salmon fishery. Salmon members may fish for salmon anywhere on club water during the season. Weirend is about two and a half miles on the right bank, from about 800 yards below the old Wilton Bridge to a stile near Pencraig, with a salmon hut with power and water, and boats for members. The club says the water between the Backney beat upstream and Goodrich Court downstream suits both fly and spinning, and that it is best as a spring fishery, with the prime fishing in the early months of the season.
The salmon season is 3 March to 17 October. Members can fly fish throughout, and can spin for salmon from 3 March to 31 August. Every salmon and sea trout is returned, under the Wye bylaws. The club’s day tickets cover coarse fishing on the Town Water only, so they are not a way to fish for salmon. To ask about joining the salmon section, contact Trevor Hyde, whose details are on the club’s listing.
