About the River Wye
The River Wye is the fourth longest river in the UK. It rises on Plynlimon in the Cambrian Mountains of mid Wales, only a couple of miles from the source of the Severn, and runs about 155 miles to the Severn estuary just below Chepstow. On the way it passes Rhayader, Builth Wells, Hay-on-Wye, Hereford, Ross-on-Wye, Symonds Yat and Monmouth, and the lower 16 miles, from Redbrook to Chepstow, form part of the border between England and Wales. The Lugg and the Monnow are among its tributaries.
The Wye is best known for salmon. It was famous for its big spring fish, which come into the river between January and June, and the spring catch has been recovering since the early 2000s. There is also wild brown trout and grayling fishing. It is a big coarse river as well, but this page is about the game fishing. Pollution from farming in the catchment has hit the river hard in recent years, so it is worth finding out how the water is before you go.
The fishing is held by clubs, private estates and a ticket scheme. The Wye and Usk Foundation’s Fishing Passport sells day tickets on beats along the river, Hereford and District Angling Association has rights from Breinton to Fownhope, Ross-on-Wye Angling Club holds salmon water around Ross, and a number of estates let their own stretches.
Check the details for the stretch you plan to fish.
