About River Wye, Breinton to Fownhope
This is Hereford & District Angling Association’s water on the River Wye, from Breinton through Hereford to Fownhope, with some breaks. The association publishes a page and a map for each section: Lower Breinton, Wareham, Belmont (Pump House, Villa Street, City North Bank, City South Bank and the Tennis Courts), Eign, Bartonsham, Field Farm, Holme Lacy from Lugg’s Mouth to Lucksall, and Holme Lacy 4 and The Elms. This listing covers them together, because the association sets one set of rules for all its waters.
The association says the Wye is mostly known for its coarse fishing. For game fishing, its Eign page says the Vineyard beats offer the best chance of a salmon on its water, given the right conditions and time of year, with good brown trout fishing in the faster parts of the beat. The Bartonsham page says trout and grayling can be targeted in the rippled water with nymphs. Holme Lacy 4 and The Elms is described as a long established salmon fishery with several named pools, and members book in advance to fish it.
The association’s salmon season is 3 March to 17 October and its trout season is 17 March to 8 October. Members fish on their membership, and visitors can buy a day ticket for salmon or for trout and coarse from the tackle shops the association names.
