Penpont Water is about 600 metres of a small, clear trout stream near Altarnun, fished from Rose Park Fishery. It rises at Bowithick, no more than four miles upstream, and is almost untouched by anglers. The beat is small and mostly tree lined, which makes the fishing tricky when the water is low and the trees are in full leaf. Moving slowly and keeping casts short and accurate is the key to hooking a Penpont trout. Expect plenty of trout of 3 to 9 inches, with the chance of larger fish.

The Passport advises a short rod of 6 to 9 feet, rated 1 to 4 weight, and waders are a must if you want to cover plenty of water. An upstream dry fly or a klink and dink suits most of the shallow pockets, and swinging wets or nymphing suits the deeper glides and pools. A few larger pools hold very good sized brown trout.

This is a booking only beat, fly only and catch and release, with barbless or de-barbed hooks only and a landing net. Dogs are not allowed. Brown trout and sea trout season runs from 15 March to 30 September, and grayling from 16 June to 31 October. A day costs 3 Fish Pass tokens, booked through the Westcountry Angling Passport.
