About Latchford Fly Fishers
Latchford Fly Fishers leases trout fishing on the River Kennet at Avington, on an estate in the Kennet Valley east of Hungerford in Berkshire. The water is a mix of the main river, the Half Water and a number of carriers, some of it technical, and the fishing is for wild brown trout that run light on stocking and wary with it. Mayfly time is the highlight of the season, with hatches the club describes as leaving the water boiling with rising fish when conditions are right.
Rules on the Kennet water are upstream only throughout. Dry fly only runs until the end of June, after which upstream nymph is allowed as well; fishing down or across the current is not permitted. No wading is needed and gun boots are recommended instead, with a rod of seven to eight feet and a line no heavier than a five weight suggested for the conditions.
Latchford Fly Fishers is a members’ club with no day tickets, built around its own lake and a stretch of the River Rib in Hertfordshire. The Kennet fishing at Avington is offered to members on top of that home water and is arranged through club member Laurence Lock, who can also bring guests along; there is no separately published price for it. For fishing details, or to ask about membership, contact Laurence Lock at info@ribs.co.uk.
