Stithians Lake is the largest inland water in West Cornwall, a 274 acre reservoir a few miles from the A30 near Redruth, set among farmland and moorland. South West Lakes Trust describes it as one of England’s most westerly trout fisheries. It is regularly stocked with rainbow trout up to 6lb and has a good natural head of brown trout, which fish well in the summer months on a catch and release basis.

Only fly fishing is permitted, from the bank or from a boat. Boats are booked in advance and a safety induction video has to be watched before first use. Float tubing is available for £10 on top of a day or season permit, on the buddy system or with safety cover. The Trust says large numbers of hawthorn flies give good dry fly fishing early in the season, and that the sticklebacks and rudd make autumn fry bashing productive. Montana, Viva, buzzer patterns, Cat’s Whisker and Invicta are the flies it names. The season runs from 28 February to 31 December.

Day, evening, half day and season tickets are sold online or by phone through South West Lakes Trust, and season permits can also be bought at the Activity Centre on site. Parking is £2 for one hour, £3 for three hours or £6 for the day, and there is a café on site. Under 18s fish free with a paying adult.
