About Wansbeck Angling Association

Wansbeck Angling Association traces its history to 1907, when several clubs and fishing rights holders joined together to offer affordable trout fishing to people who lived and worked around the River Wansbeck in Northumberland. It holds the rights to seven miles of the river, from Scotch Gill Woods in Morpeth to Leech Bank at Stakeford.

The fish are native wild brown trout, and the association also stocks the river three times a season with fish from 9 to 13 inches, which can reach 3lb or more. March browns hatch from late March and the mayfly are on by early June. The season runs from 22 March to 30 September, with a bag limit of two fish a day. Scotch Gill Woods and Whorral Bank are fly only; the other sections allow fly and worm.

Permits run from a single day to a full season, and there is no waiting list for full membership. On the permit page, written for the 2026 season, a day permit is £8, a week £20, a full senior season £40 and a concession £30, and juniors aged 12 to 16 pay £20. New senior and concession members pay a £10 joining fee, and serving and ex-serving members of the Armed Forces join without one. Permits come from Rod and Tackle in Cramlington and McDermott’s in Ashington.
