Esthwaite Water is a lake of about 280 acres near Hawkshead, in the Lake District National Park, fished for trout from the bank or from a boat. Fly, spinner or worm are all allowed, with one rod per angler, and every trout must be released quickly and with minimal handling. Spinners must be 5cm or shorter and carry single hooks only.

The trout season runs from 15 March to 30 September. An adult day permit costs £25 and a half day £20, a junior day permit £15 and a junior half day £10, and a season permit £350, or £600 with a boat. Boats are £30 for a full day and £20 for a half day or evening. Permits, boats and Environment Agency rod licences can be bought on site, and you can phone ahead to check availability.

The fishery stocks brown trout through the spring and summer, averaging about 3.5lb with larger fish among them, and says the evening rise on the open water is when the surface hatches draw trout up. Fly fishing tuition is available with qualified instructors.
