Two hundred and eighty metres of single-bank fishing on the River Meon at Meonstoke, in the valley the river follows down from the South Downs towards the Solent. The Meon is the most easterly of the Hampshire chalk streams and a smaller relation of the Itchen, just as clear and a little faster, varied enough that a short stretch holds gravel shallows, deeper corners and open meadow. At this scale the fishing is close range and visual. You work the bank, watch the water, and cast to fish you have already found.
The trout are wild browns, the beat is not stocked, and the fishing is catch and release. Fly only, dry fly and nymph, fished from the bank with no wading. The season runs 1 April to 31 October, and a day ticket is £65 for one rod.
A two-bed Fisherman's Cabin is available on site all year with breakfast included, so this suits a short stay as much as a day trip. A short rod rated for a #3 or #4 line is about right for water this size, and fine tippet is worth having on a river this clear. Bookings are arranged directly with Meon Meadows.
