About The Piscatorial Society

The Piscatorial Society fishes chalk streams across Hampshire and Wiltshire, holding rights on the rivers Test, Itchen, Wylye and Hampshire Avon, together with smaller water on the Alre, Anton and Candover Brook. It is not connected to the Sussex Piscatorial Society, a separate and later club based further east in Sussex and Kent; the shared name is coincidence. Founded in 1836, in the Society’s own words when ‘William IV was King’, it is one of the oldest angling societies anywhere, and it still counts its holdings at around 20 miles of chalk stream across those seven rivers, including a beat known as Anton Beat 6 and water near Freefolk on the Test. On the upper Itchen and Candover Brook, some of the Society’s water is leased from the Grange Estate at Northington, whose own estate describes much of its fishing as let to the Piscatorial Society.

Guests are welcome on most of the Society’s waters for most of the year, free of charge, which the club presents as one of the practical benefits of membership: more water than a member could otherwise reach without holding several separate club or syndicate memberships. Beyond that, the Society’s public pages do not set out rod limits, permitted methods or season dates in detail.

Membership does not require a proposer or seconder. An applicant without one is instead invited to talk, and sometimes fish, with the committee. The Society describes its waiting list as usually short, and new members hold full rights as soon as payment is complete; long standing membership is common, with an average tenure of over thirteen years. No subscription price or joining fee is published on the website. Anyone interested should contact the Secretary through the Society’s site for current figures and the prospective member’s guide.

Waiting list

The Society describes its waiting list as usually short and says it does not keep applicants hanging around. Applicants without a proposer or seconder meet the committee directly, sometimes including a day's fishing as a guest, rather than following a fixed sponsorship route.

FishingBeats is an independent guide with no affiliation to the fisheries we list. Listings are editorial and unpaid, and are not supplied or approved by the fishery. See our listings policy. Listing details are compiled by FishingBeats and may change or contain mistakes. Some services, such as tuition, ghillies, or accommodation, may only apply to certain packages and not to standard day tickets.
