Double bank

Grogarth is about a kilometre of mixed double and single bank on the lower Fal, running upstream from the bridge at Tregony. It has some good pools and runs, and plenty of wild brown trout, mostly 5 to 10 inches, with some very large fish in the deep, snaggy pools. Being close to the tidal limit, it sees good sea trout runs from April, and those fish will take a single dry fly, a nymph or a pair of the two, best after a spate in the morning or evening.

Trees line much of the beat, with plenty of bankside and in river structure, so the fishing is tight but productive. The Passport advises chest waders and a wading staff, because casting from the bank is very difficult, and a 6 to 8 foot 6 rod rated 2 to 5 weight with dry fly, nymph or indicator rigs. Electric fencing is sometimes used in the neighbouring fields, so take care on the way in, and Japanese knotweed grows on the beat, so please avoid disturbing it. A day costs 2 Fish Pass tokens, booked through the Westcountry Angling Passport.
