Fish species

Anglers on the River Fal can target brown trout, sea trout and salmon. Brown trout dominate most beats here; grayling, sea trout, and salmon appear on certain rivers and seasons.

The River Fal rises at Pentevale on Goss Moor, between St Columb and Roche, and runs about 18 miles to the English Channel at Falmouth, through the Carrick Roads. Its tributaries include the Truro River, the Kennal, the Penryn River and the Carnon River. Downstream it opens out into a drowned river valley, one of the classic rias of the south coast of Cornwall and Devon.

The catchment is mainly Devonian slates, shales and grits, with granite in the upper reaches, and most of the land is farmed with some woodland.

Game fishing on the Fal is mostly for wild brown trout and sea trout. The Westcountry Angling Passport has beats on the river near Grampound and further down towards Truro, where it describes brown trout and a sea trout run from April. Under Environment Agency rules salmon caught in the Fal must be returned.
