Fishing methods
Treraven is 720 metres of left bank on the lower River Camel, near Wadebridge, on a floodplain. Being low in the catchment, the beat sees strong runs of migratory fish through the season, and it also holds brown trout, some of them estuary fish, and mullet. Much of the beat is open with room for a back cast, but be careful of walkers who wander onto it. The land is owned by a conservation charity and managed for wildlife.
The Passport recommends a 7 to 9 weight single handed rod or a light double hander for salmon, a 6 weight for sea trout and mullet, and a 5 to 7 weight for the larger brown trout. Bring a long handled net, because some of the banks are high and slippery. Night fishing for sea trout is possible by prior agreement with the Passport.
Fly only, and strictly catch and release on every species. All rod caught salmon from the River Camel catchment, including the Allen, must be returned. Dogs are not allowed, because of grazing livestock and ground nesting birds. Brown trout and sea trout can be fished from 1 May to 30 September, and salmon and mullet from 1 May to 15 December. A day costs 5 Fish Pass tokens, booked through the Westcountry Angling Passport.
