Fish species

Anglers on the River Fowey can target brown trout, sea trout and salmon. Brown trout dominate most beats here; grayling, sea trout, and salmon appear on certain rivers and seasons.

The River Fowey rises at Fowey Well, about a mile north west of Brown Willy on Bodmin Moor, not far from tributaries that start at Dozmary Pool and Colliford Lake. It runs about 25 miles, passing Lanhydrock House, Restormel Castle and Lostwithiel, then widens below Milltown and meets the English Channel at the town of Fowey. It has seven tributaries, and the largest is the River Lerryn.

The upper river is moorland, giving way to woodland and mostly livestock farmland lower down. The reservoirs at Colliford and Sibleyback affect its flow.

The Fowey is fished for salmon, sea trout and brown trout. Lanhydrock Angling Association fishes about a mile and a half of both banks through the National Trust estate at Lanhydrock, mainly for salmon and sea trout, and Liskeard and District Angling Club holds water on the river too.

Fishing is held by clubs and private owners, so check the details for the stretch you plan to fish.
