This is the stretch of the River Chew that runs out of Chew Valley Lake, past Chew Magna and Stanton Drew, down to Pensford. Knowle Angling Association and Frome and District Angling Association share the lease on it, so members of either club can fish it, wherever you see the Knowle signs.

Frome and District describe it as a trout water, with grayling in the lower reaches around Pensford and coarse fish in the river too. Knowle say the Chew has a good mayfly hatch and a good head of wild brown trout, along with stocked rainbows, and that both rise to a dry fly in the right conditions.

Frome and District say it is open to fly anglers from 1 April and to coarse anglers from 16 June, and that it is closed to all fishing on 15 March. Park at Bye Mills, where the car park is signed for Knowle anglers, and sign in and out on the clipboard in the box.

It is members’ water. Knowle members join through Clubmate, and Frome and District members fish it as part of their trout membership.
