Fish species

Anglers on the River Chew can target brown trout and grayling. Brown trout dominate most beats here; grayling, sea trout, and salmon appear on certain rivers and seasons.

The River Chew rises at Chewton Mendip in Somerset and runs north west for some 17 miles to join the River Avon at Keynsham. Near the top it forms Chew Valley Lake, and some of the lake water is used to keep the river flowing. Below the lake it passes Chew Stoke, Chew Magna and Stanton Drew, then Pensford, Publow, Woollard and Compton Dando before it reaches Keynsham.

Below the lake the Chew mixes slower sections and long runs with deeper pools, weirs and faster water, from shallows to pools more than two metres deep. Fly life is good, with sedges, midges and olives, and a summer mayfly hatch that brings fish up to the dry fly.

Wild brown trout are the main fish for the fly, up to about 2lb, and grayling are caught too, especially through the winter, so the river can be fished for much of the year. It is a challenging river. Stealth, a shorter rod and light tackle tend to work best, and wading helps.

Lower down, towards Keynsham, coarse fish come into the mix, including chub, roach, perch and dace, and fish passes at three weirs around Keynsham help fish move upstream. The trout water we know of is club water for members.
