About Frome and District Angling Association
Frome and District Angling Association was founded in Frome in 1931 and is a large club with trout and coarse fishing around the town. Among its trout water is the River Mells, also known as the Mells Stream, which the association describes as the most prolific of Somerset’s small stream wild trout waters. It has two stretches of the Mells: the Mells Estate water, running down from Mells village through the Wadbury Valley, and Vallis Vale below it, which takes in the adjoining Egford Brook.
Trout fishing is for members only. Both Mells stretches are fly only and catch and release. On the Mells Estate water hooks must be barbless or have crushed barbs, and the season runs from 1 April to 15 October.
Membership is bought online through Clubmate and runs for twelve months from the day you join. From 1 July 2026 an adult pays £60, over 65s £50, teenagers £20 and juniors £5. A waiting list operates when the club is oversubscribed. You need an Environment Agency rod licence, and the bailiffs check membership in the Clubmate Fishing app. The association can be reached at fromeanglers@outlook.com.
