Avon Dam Reservoir lies deep in South Dartmoor, above the village of South Brent, reached on foot from the car park at Shipley Bridge. Like Meldon and Venford, the fishing is free: a current Environment Agency rod licence is all you need, with no ticket or club required.

Wild brown trout are the only fish here. Fly, spinner and bait are all allowed, and up to four fish over ten inches may be kept each day, though South West Lakes Trust prefers catch and release, using barbless hooks when you do return a fish. Fishing is from the bank only.

The walk in is the real work: around a mile and a half from Shipley Bridge, much of it uphill. Parking at Shipley Bridge is pay and display, and there are toilets at the car park. The season runs from 15 March to 15 October.
