Fly methods
Roxy, Diawl Bach, Car Park and Lily make up the four linked lakes at Barn Elms Fly Fishery near Bradfield in Berkshire, about six and a half acres of chalk stream and spring fed water, though in practice it fishes as one connected water rather than four separate pools.
Roxy is the largest and the one most anglers try first, stream fed at its top corner, roughly rectangular, with a deep channel running through the middle toward the bridge where it meets Diawl Bach. Diawl Bach, named after the stillwater nymph, rewards an angler willing to search it out, especially when a hatch brings fish up on dry flies, buzzers and hoppers. Car Park Lake is the smallest and least fished of the four, good for stalking a visible fish, and Lily, covered in lily pads through summer, fishes best at the start and end of the season.
Rainbow and brown trout are stocked weekly, up to 8lb, with some blue and gold trout stocked too. Tickets are sold by the fish: catch and kill from £42 for two fish to £52 for four, or catch and release from £47, with options to keep one to four fish and then carry on releasing up to four more.
Single fly only, maximum hook size 8, and barbless or crushed barbed hooks for anything you release. No wading or swimming, no dogs, and every catch, blank days included, goes on the chalkboard by the car park before you leave.
