Horsebridge Lake is Bossington Estate’s stillwater, a spring-fed pool stocked with rainbow, brown and blue trout. It’s a good place to start out: the lake works well for family days, corporate groups and casting instruction, and the fishing hut has self-catering facilities for a full day out.

A full day ticket takes four fish and a half day takes two; the estate runs no catch and release here, so once you’ve reached your limit the day is done. Fishing is from the bank only, dry fly or nymph on a standard hook no bigger than size 10. The lake can also be booked for exclusive use, up to four rods, with a fifth and sixth rod available at extra cost.

The lake season runs from 1 March to 11 October, longer than the estate’s river season. A day ticket starts from £92. Day rod passes are booked through the Bossington Estate Office, the same way as the river beats.

The fishery and river

River

Rising at Ashe, near Overton, the River Test runs for 40 miles through Hampshire, flowing south through Whitchurch, Longparish, and Wherwell before the Rivers Dever and Anton join the main channel near Chilbolton. For much of its length the Test is not one river but an amalgam of main channel, mill leats, carriers,…
