Burrator Reservoir is a hundred and fifty acre water on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, near Yelverton, below dramatic granite tors and open moorland, close to the old Princetown Railway and a wildlife reserve. A Discovery Centre by the dam has displays on the area’s history.

Rainbow trout are stocked for bank fishing, and a good head of wild brown trout, to about four pounds, must always be released. Fly fishing only is the rule across the water. Two fishing boats are kept on the reservoir, run by the Burrator Fly Fishers club; boat use needs club membership and a safety induction talk.

Public toilets stand at the main dam, with several car parks around the reservoir and an accessible wildlife trail. Day tickets, evening tickets, half day tickets and season tickets are all sold online or by phone through South West Lakes Trust, and evening start times move through the season, from three o’clock in spring and autumn to five o’clock at the height of summer.

Stocking and fish species

moderate stocking · Rainbow trout stocked for bank fishing. Wild brown trout to about 4lb, always released.
