Half a mile of the River Dever runs past the lakes at Dever Springs, and anyone fishing there for the day is welcome on it. It is a small chalk stream, narrow and clear, and it fishes nothing like the stillwaters beside it. It holds wild brown trout and grayling, and they see you coming, so it is usually a slow walk up and one good cast rather than a lot of water covered.

Everything caught in the river goes back, whatever the rules are on the lakes, which seems right for a wild head of fish in a stream this size. Upstream dry fly and nymph are the methods. The Dever carries decent hatches of the usual upwinged flies through the season, and grannom have been reported again in recent years.

It is worth taking the rod down here even if you came for the big stillwater trout. The Dever runs on from Barton Stacey to join the Test at Bransbury, a couple of miles below, so this is a fair sample of what the little river is like.
