Meldon Reservoir sits high on the edge of Dartmoor National Park near Okehampton, about 900 feet above sea level, close to the Granite Way cycle path. The fishing here is free: anyone with a current Environment Agency rod licence can fish for wild brown trout, with no ticket or permit required.

The trout run small, mostly six to seven inches, with the occasional larger fish for anyone who puts the hours in. Fly, spinner and bait are all allowed, and up to four fish over ten inches may be kept each day, though South West Lakes Trust would rather you let them go, using barbless hooks if you do.

Meldon is steep-sided, so there are only a handful of spots where you can comfortably reach the water, and there is no boat fishing. A car park and toilets are at the reservoir. The season runs from 15 March to 15 October.
