Rothern Bridge is an 800 metre beat on the Torridge, downstream from Great Torrington below Rothern Bridge. It is a run of decent pools and deep glides, with the chance of an early salmon or a sea trout through the season and some large brown trout.

For trout, a 9 foot single handed rod with a floating line should be enough. For salmon and sea trout, a 10 foot single handed rod covers most situations.

Fly only. Use single barbless hooks when fishing catch and release, and the Passport strongly encourages voluntary catch and release of all species. A day costs 4 Fish Pass tokens, booked through the Westcountry Angling Passport.

The river

The River Torridge describes a long loop through Devon farming country before it meets the Taw at Appledore and runs out into Bideford Bay. It is formed where two small streams, one of them rising near Higher Clovelly, come together, and it then heads east past Black Torrington and Sheepwash before swinging north…
