The Lake is Wherwell Estate’s stillwater, set among the estate’s River Test beats near the village of Wherwell in Hampshire. It takes up to six rods a day and can also be booked exclusively by a private group, with its own lakeside fishing hut and kitchen set aside for whoever is fishing it.

Stocked with rainbow trout, the lake is open for booking all year, unlike the river beats, which close over winter. Fishing starts at 9am, and dry fly and small nymphs may be used in every month, where the river restricts tactics by season. Up to four trout of at least twelve inches may be kept, with a further four of that size, caught on barbless hooks, released afterwards.

The electronic gates close automatically, at 8.30pm from May to October and 5.30pm through the rest of the year, so plan a day that gets everyone off the water in time. Rods cost £85 a day.
