Fishing methods
Cannop Brook is a small Forest of Dean stream with wild brown trout, good for a few hours’ fishing. The beat is about a mile long, between Parkend and Whitecroft, a few miles upstream of Lydney. The channel runs fairly straight, but several meanders give good depth and cover for the trout. You can’t wade it everywhere, and fallen trees need care. The Fishing Passport suggests a 6 to 7 foot rod for a 1 to 3 weight line.
The Forest of Dean has native white-clawed crayfish, a protected species, and they are under threat from signal crayfish, which carry crayfish plague. Signal crayfish have been recorded in Cannop Ponds and are thought to be in the Cannop Brook too. Spray waders, nets and tackle with Virkon before and after fishing, and Forest rangers may check that you have a sprayer in the car. Cannop and Blackpool are separate catchments, so if you fish both on one trip, fish Blackpool Brook first and Cannop Brook second.
It is fly only and catch and release, with no dogs and at most two tickets a day. In 2026 a day ticket costs £12 and a block booking £24. It can’t be booked on the Passport’s website: you check the dates online, then phone or email the Fishing Passport to book.
